Which LED Driver Do I Need? A Buyer's Honest Answer After Nichia, UV LED, and Chandelier Retrofits
I don't fix LED fixtures. I buy them, order replacement parts, and then I'm the one who explains to the CFO why something that was supposed to last ten years didn't make it to ten months.
So when I tell you that most LED failures aren't the LED's fault, believe me. It's a driver mismatch. You can buy the best LED chip on earth—a Nichia, for example—and it will still die young if you feed it the wrong current. The LED was fine. The driver was wrong. That's it.
When I first started ordering LED components, I assumed the chip was the whole story. I compared CRI numbers and lumens per watt, then picked the brightest thing under budget. Three blown drivers later, I understood: the LED is the engine, and the driver is the fuel injection. You wouldn't put a cheap carburetor on a race engine. You shouldn't pair a premium LED with a questionable driver either.
Why I Keep Ordering Nichia LEDs
Since I took over purchasing in 2020, I've processed a lot of lighting orders for our three locations. Nichia isn't the cheapest LED brand. I'll be straight with you. But when the job requires accurate color, few things beat a Nichia 519A or 219B. One small example: the Nitecore MT06MD-PG is a Nichia 219B LED penlight that we keep in every maintenance kit. It's a tiny flashlight, but that tiny light has saved us from re-installing perfectly good wiring because the technicians can actually see what they're doing.
What I mean is high CRI isn't a luxury. In our building, it's the difference between flagging a wire that looked pink under a cheap light and realizing it was actually pale orange. Put another way: a 90 CRI light makes a technician safer when they're tracing unlabeled wires behind a patch panel.
I have mixed feelings about premium LEDs. On one hand, the Nichia premium adds up when you're buying hundreds of chips. On the other, I've seen no-name chips fail in six months. For color-critical work, I still go Nichia. The driver, however, is non-negotiable.
The Nichia UV LED Lesson
UV LEDs are a different animal. We once ordered a Nichia UV LED for a small curing application our maintenance team needed. I didn't think much about the driver. I assumed a 365 nm LED would work with any generic constant-current driver that claimed to be compatible. (Should mention: the driver wasn't compatible. It was overdriving the chip by 150 mA. The chip cooked itself within a week.) That was a $200 mistake plus a rush order, and finance didn't love it.
The initial misjudgment was thinking UV LED brightness was the only spec that mattered. Nope. Forward voltage and current have to match the chip's datasheet. If you ignore them, you get a lamp that either underperforms or a chip that destroys itself. And with UV LEDs, you also need proper shielding and eye protection. That's not a corporate suggestion—it's a safety issue.
Fancy Fixtures Make Driver Mistakes Expensive
Here's where the chandeliers come in. We recently had a conference room with a Baccarat chandelier. Beautiful crystal. And I learned that repairing a piece like that requires more than picking a random LED driver from a catalog. If the driver hums or flickers or drops voltage under load, you're not just replacing a part—you're dealing with a fixture that has no business being treated like a utility light from a hardware store.
Similarly, if you're converting an old gas chandelier to LED, you're dealing with a fixture that was never designed for modern electrical control. The most common mistake in those projects is assuming any dimmable driver will work. Dimming compatibility is not a guarantee. It has to match the LED module and the dimmer switch. (Which, honestly, is where the "I'll just hire an electrician" instinct wins.)
That's not me saying you should avoid the job. It's me saying the driver choice matters twice as much when the fixture itself is expensive. If you put a $3 driver in a $5,000 chandelier, you're not saving money. You're creating a future problem.
So, Which LED Driver Do I Need?
If you're asking that question before placing an order, you're already ahead of where I was. The short answer: you need a driver that matches the LED's forward voltage and current, with a sensible safety margin. Start with the LED datasheet, not with what's left in the spare-parts drawer.
Most reputable driver manufacturers will meet IEC 61347-2-13 (the standard for LED controlgear) or UL 8750. That's a good baseline. But the real spec match is milliamps and volts. A constant-current driver will have a voltage range. Your LED's forward voltage needs to fall inside that range. The current output needs to match the LED's rated current.
In other words, never buy "a 30-watt driver" without checking the actual current. Wattage is a result, not a spec. You can have two "30W" drivers with entirely different output currents, and only one will be safe for your LED.
Here's what I check now, every time:
- Constant current or constant voltage? Most high-power LEDs use constant-current drivers. COB and similar modules too. If you're running a strip, constant voltage may be the right call. Different jobs. Don't mix them up.
- Dimming compatibility? If the fixture is going on a dimmer, the driver and the dimmer have to talk. Some LED drivers are dimmable but only with specific dimmer types. A "dimmable" driver and a "dimmable" bulb are not automatically a match.
- Is it certified for the fixture type? Retrofit gas chandeliers and custom fixtures often need drivers that are rated for enclosed or insulated spaces. The "it fits" temptation isn't enough.
If that sounds like a lot, it is. But I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. That's why I write this stuff down for our internal orders. (And honestly, it saves me from telling the finance team we need another rush order.)
I know some electricians will roll their eyes at a buyer giving driver advice. Fair enough. I'm not doing the installation. But I'm the one ordering the parts, and I'm the one who gets blamed when a "perfectly fine" LED fails because someone didn't match the current.
So here's my position: before you spend extra on premium LEDs, make sure you're equally serious about the driver. And yes, I still buy Nichia. Because when the driver is right, the Nichia performance is worth it. If the driver is wrong, no LED brand can save you. At least, that's been my experience across more than five years of lighting orders, one UV LED emergency, and a very expensive Baccarat chandelier.
There's something satisfying about a fixture that turns on with clean, stable light every single time. After all the blown drivers, the rush orders, and the finance rejection emails, that stability is the payoff. Period.
