I have managed purchasing for a 200-person hospitality company since 2020. Neither tells me whether the light will still look like a single cohesive fixture in the third year, or what a replacement visit costs when the socket is sixteen feet in the air.

You are not buying a light bulb. You are buying lighting hours that don’t require another service call.

What a Baroque Chandelier Taught Me

One of the buildings I oversee is a 1929 event venue. The main dining room has a baroque chandelier—an older fixture, restored and rewired, with the kind of curving crystal presence that makes guests stop talking when they walk in. Every chandelier in the room is effectively a unique chandelier; the glass shades have been matched by hand over the decades. There is no standard kit for anything.

In February 2021, I ordered 240 candelabra-base LED bulbs for those fixtures. The lamps were dimmable, filament-style, 2,700K, and about $3.60 each. My records show $864. For the first months I thought I had nailed it. The chandeliers looked warm, energy use dropped, and the dimmers did not hum.

Then reality arrived. In 2022, one bulb started flickering. By late 2023, our maintenance log showed 22 bulbs removed, and another seven were still in their sockets but no longer matched the lamps next to them. Some looked amber. One looked green. At five hours a day, those lamps had roughly 4,000 hours of use—a fraction of the 25,000 hours printed on the box.

The most frustrating part of LED sourcing is not total failure. It is inconsistency. You’d think two bulbs from the same box with identical printed specs would create identical light, but they don’t always. In a single baroque chandelier, that inconsistency is a business problem.

Why Nichia LED Components Matter

Here is a simplified version of what I learned. White LEDs are usually a blue LED chip coated with phosphor. You cannot create an efficient white LED in the modern sense without the blue chip underneath. Nichia is a Japanese component manufacturer, not a bulb brand you see on a retail shelf, and much of the foundational work on high-brightness blue LEDs happened at the company in the 1990s. The 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized the invention of efficient blue LEDs, “which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources” (Source: NobelPrize.org, October 2014).

The buyer’s lesson here is practical. Nichia’s commercial LEDs are components that lamp makers put inside finished products. When a lamp spec sheet names the component, it gives me a verifiable standard. When a spec sheet tells me only watts and lumens, I am buying a lottery ticket, not a lamp.

This is not brand loyalty. I don’t believe there is exactly one competent emitter manufacturer in the world. But there is a difference between an identified component and an unidentified one. In an exposed chandelier lamp, the visible result is the product. If I don’t know what is in the socket, I can’t predict what the room will look like in three years.

So the wattage question is easy. It is also done. The energy story is no longer the costly part of the LED transition.

The costly part is everything after installation. Let me give you a rough estimate from a 2024 proposal: re-lamping the main baroque chandelier in the dining room required two technicians, a lift, and careful removal of glass. The labor portion was over $700. The LED lamps on the same quote cost less than half of that. If you save $1.50 per socket by choosing a cheaper lamp—about $60 on a 40-lamp fixture—you are accepting more risk of a future $700 service visit to fix what that lamp did to the room.

That is total cost of ownership. Before any comparison of LED bulbs, I now write down:

  • Actual watts and expected energy over the lamp’s life
  • Rated life and color stability, not just stated hours
  • Replacement labor and equipment access
  • Color consistency across many sockets at one time
  • CRI and the visual effect in the specific fixture

For a linen closet, that list is overkill. Not every socket deserves the same budget. Buy the cheap lamp for the places where failure is a minor inconvenience. But in a baroque chandelier, or any visible fixture with exposed lamps, the lamp is part of the architecture. It deserves a specification, not a bargain bin.

If you are buying LED replacements for anything beyond arm’s reach, stop opening with watts and start opening the spec sheet. The LED component inside tells you more about total cost than the wattage ever will.
